If you were a Song…
The other day, I had the honour of sharing some Brand Therapy with a group of artists at Club Passim in Boston - a cosy, 66-year old, apparently legendary music venue, where the likes of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell have played.
The artists I met are part of the Folk Collective, a beautifully diverse, justice-led group of indie musicians, each one with a stunning gift of sharing their soul and bringing down walls through their music.
And, surprise surprise, pretty much all of them struggle with the whole branding / self-promotion / marketing thing.
“It feels like manipulation.”
“It feels soul draining.”
“I don’t want to put myself in a box.”
“I hate trying to ‘convince’ people of my music.”
Mm-hmm, it all sounded so familiar. Time to give branding a rebrand!
Since I was amongst musicians, I figured the best metaphor to use for branding was song.
You know how a song begins with an impulse? A reason for wanting to exist? You do too. That’s your brand’s Why.
You know how a song make us feel things? How it can change the energy of a room even when it’s over? You do too. That’s your brand’s Vibe.
You know how a song often has an anthem? Words it keeps coming back to again and again? You do too. That your brand’s Message.
You know how someone else can sing the exact same song, but nobody can sing it quite like you? That’s your brand’s Voice.
You know how a song can contain an entire life, an entire world, yet it still needs to be distilled into a title - a doorway into the song? That’s essentially what your Brand is - a visual-verbal doorway into your world.
If you like the idea of branding as a process of revealing rather than concealing, and marketing as sharing your soul rather than selling your soul, you may resonate with my brand & website offerings too.
