Donations and Fundraising through your Business

When the world is on fire, business as usual can feel downright wrong.

But until I decide to drop everything and become a humanitarian aid worker, I find comfort in knowing that supporting my business actually allows me to better support the people and causes I care about.

I’m so inspired by entrepreneurs like Simone Seol, who uses her incredible marketing and business chops to make great money for herself and the causes she cares about. Just this last year, she raised thousands specifically for Ukrainian and Gazan refugees.

As mentioned in my Social Justice Guide for Websites, there are many ways we can use our businesses to support the causes we care about, including donating a portion of your income to a particular charity or organisation, and/or creating an offering that is specifically intended as a fundraiser. Squarespace has a great donation feature for this.

This post offers some guidelines on how to integrate donations or fundraising into your offerings. Big gratitude to Lia Wong for helping me put this together!

  • Choose a Relevant Cause: Select a cause that aligns with your values, and potentially your clients’ values, too.

  • Clearly State the Donation: Clearly highlight that a portion of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to a specific cause or organisation. Be transparent about the percentage or amount that will be donated.

  • Explain the Impact: In your website and/or promotions, you can go into more detail on how the funds will be used, and how it can make a difference.

  • Visual Representation: You may want to use visuals such as infographics or images to illustrate the impact of the donation. This can help your community visualise the change they are contributing to and make it more compelling.

  • Double Benefit: Of course, don’t neglect to emphasise the value of your product or service as well! Clients get the double benefit of receiving your offering, while also contributing to a worthy cause.

  • Provide Updates: Keep you community updated on the donation and impact. This demonstrates transparency and accountability, and is a powerful way of inspiring more people to join the cause.

  • Call to Action: Make it easy for those in your community to act with clear call to actions, and a user-friendly purchasing process.
